A common mistake when placing your parent into long term care

As a senior placement agent I help families everyday that are in the process of moving their aging parent into assisted care. It's natural that most people want to keep their parents as functional and independent as long as possible. But one thing that I try to help people understand is how critical it is to plan for the long term. More specifically, don't focus only on what your parent's needs are today but where they're likely to be 6 months from now or a year from now. I frequently get calls from stressed out families that placed their parent into a facility that was not the proper "fit" for their care only to call me for assistance in moving them into the "right" place. The point is to try to minimize the number of moves your parent makes since it's extremely difficult for them physically and emotionally. Remember, be realistic about their advancing care needs and consult with a professional, doing this is truly taking their best interest at heart.
